Standing Desk for Tall People: How High It Needs to Go (6'0" to 6'8")
If you're tall, most desks aren't too low when you sit, they're too low when you stand, especially with a walking pad. Here's how high your desk, chair and monitor need to go, and which desks we've checked actually get there.
How high your desk needs to go
Standing desk listings lead with the lowest height, which matters to short people. If you're tall, the number to check is the highest height, including the desktop. Here's what you need, and which desks from our standing desk guide reach your standing height.
| Your height | Sitting desk | Standing desk | Standing on a walking pad | Our desks that reach your standing height |

Walking pad column adds about 4.5 in for the deck. Desk heights include a 1 in desktop for frames sold without one.
What to check on a standing desk
1. The top of the range, with the desktop
Manufacturers often quote the frame alone. Add your desktop's thickness (usually about 0.75–1.25 in) to get the real work-surface height. In our guide: FlexiSpot E6 Bamboo up to 6'5"; Vari Classic Electric Standing Desk 60x30 up to 6'6"; FlexiSpot EN1 One-Piece up to 6'0".
2. Walking pads change everything
A walking pad deck adds about 4–5 in. At 6'2", that means a desk reaching about 52.1″, which none of the desks in our guide do. If you plan to walk while you work, check the desk's maximum height against the walking pad column above before you buy; see our walking pad desk height chart.
3. Stability near full height
Every desk sways more near the top of its range, and tall users spend their standing time there. Three-stage legs keep more overlap between the leg sections at full height, and dual motors usually come with higher load ratings. Leave headroom below the rated load.
Chairs for tall people
When sitting, a standard 29–30 in desk is close enough up to about 6'3"; from about 6'4" it's an inch or more too low, so raise it with furniture risers or set a sit-stand desk higher. Seat height is rarely the problem for tall people (at 6'2" you need about 19.1″, and the chairs in our guides go higher). Seat depth is: look for a deep seat or a sliding one so your thighs are supported. How high each chair goes:
- Branch Ergonomic Chair: seat up to 21.0 in, fits up to about 6'8"
- Steelcase Series 1: seat up to 20.5 in, fits up to about 6'7"
- SIHOO M18: seat up to 21.3 in, fits up to about 6'8"
- Steelcase Leap V2: seat up to 20.5 in, fits up to about 6'7"
- Herman Miller Aeron (Size B): seat up to 20.5 in, fits up to about 6'7"
The Leap V2's seat slides from about 15.75 to 18.75 in deep, which suits long thighs; the Aeron comes in three sizes, so tall users should check the size chart. See our Aeron vs. Leap comparison.
Raise your monitor
At 6'2" the top of your screen should be about 52.4″ from the floor when sitting and 70.2″ when standing. If your monitor's stand doesn't go that high, a monitor arm will; see the monitor height chart for your height.
Heights are estimates from average body proportions, measured from the floor in regular shoes (about 1 in); barefoot, subtract about 1 in. Long legs or a long torso can shift them by an inch or two, so fine-tune with our calculator.
